Our Maternity Photo Session

(And Why You Should Consider One Too)

For any of you that know me – you know that I LOVE being a photographer. I love being behind the lens, creating, and making memories. I constantly encourage people to document their lives, and remind other women that they are beautiful just as they are. But when it comes to being in front of the camera. Well, lets just say, I get a bit paralyzed.

I have been putting off taking maternity photos for weeks, but as baby girl’s arrival is getting imminent, my sweet hubby convinced me this week that it was time. Or that we might miss our opportunity. Though Garrett did a wonderful job capturing me in the most flattering light possible, I must admit that I don’t love how I look in these photos, and that I am a bit anxious about posting them. I am by no means photogenic, and with a big pregnant belly, swollen ankles, and toes that I can no longer see. Yikes.

BUT I also know that I will cherish these memories for years to come. These photos will remind me of what a miracle it is to be able to carry a life. They will remind me of what my first pregnant belly looked like. And every kick and joy that I experienced in the 9 months of carrying our baby girl.

You may be wondering why I am sharing all of this. I am sharing to encourage other Mommas to take maternity photos! While you may not feel like it at the time (trust me – I didn’t!), I really believe that you will also cherish the images of this special moment in your life. In case you need a bit more convincing, here are a few reasons I think it’s worthwhile to take maternity photos.

Why take maternity photos?

This one is the easiest for me to tell others, but the hardest for me to believe for myself. Don’t let that little voice in your head get the best of you (or all those aches & pains!). You are lovely. And what is happening within you is amazing. You are radiant. The “pregnancy glow” is a saying for a reason!

2) The memories…

This is the only time in your life that you will be pregnant with this baby. The one and only time. And while you may be pregnant again in the future, every pregnancy and baby is different. This is such a special and fleeting moment in your life. It will be gone before you know it.

3) No regrets!

I have heard lots of beautiful mamas talk about not wanting to be in front of the camera while they are pregnant. Trust me – I totally get it! But I have also had those same sweet women come to me later only to say that they regret not having photos taken while they were expecting. Never have I had someone say they regretted taking maternity photos! And just think what a sweet memoir it will be for your little one someday. Priceless!

Ok – now I will put my money where my mouth is. Here are my maternity photos as captured by my sweet husband (who, by the way, is also the fabulous second-shooter for psalm27creative)!
